That adds more light on this passage.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1464309008858992954.post-10986088189404643502009-08-21T17:26:33.050-07:002009-08-21T17:26:33.050-07:00A few thoughts:

It protects by its very nature, not unlike that of a turtle's shell.

Having worn armour in a contact sport (historical fencing), you almost have to put some faith in the wearing of armour, otherwise you wouldn't wisely enter the fray at all.

So I appreciate how Paul uses the image of armour, inviting people to "wear" these virutes as providing protection and defence; if God indeed provides these, then truth, righteousness, salvation can be trustworthy equipment indeed. And then there's the sword which is a tool as much as the shield.

But that's the equipment, if you will. There is more.

As a former fencer, I also appreciate Paul's concept of stance. Proper footwork in any martial art--even in the beauty of dance--cannot be taken for granted. Without it all the armour in the world won't do you much good. A "ready" stance is one that is balanced, so that whether you defend or whether you take a more offensive tactic, you will often succeed better at both.

So while Paul's imagery may indeed be very martial, I appreciate his keen eye for the "art" behind it all--the discipline--which any martial artist (and disciple) would instantly recognize and appreciate.

Not sure if this helps with the appreciation of this passage, but as a former historical fencer, I have since heard this passage with "new ears".

Peace.

KentAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1464309008858992954.post-34145446694450721432009-08-21T03:06:02.709-07:002009-08-21T03:06:02.709-07:00Yes, this is good and fits with Marva Dawn's c...Yes, this is good and fits with Marva Dawn's chapter on the armor in her book on powers, weakness and the tabernacling of God (sorry I don't have the exact title). You are right to emphasize the virtues (truth, righteousness, etc) instead of the armor (shield, helmet, etc). Our weapons are not of this world either.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1464309008858992954.post-73117070354861928642009-08-20T13:10:14.463-07:002009-08-20T13:10:14.463-07:00Brilliant.
